It’s obvious that when you buy energy efficient windows, over their life, you’ll be saving money from reduced energy costs. But there’s another way you can save money from the start.
If you’re a Studio City homeowner or a resident anywhere in Southern California who replaces their windows, you may be eligible for federal tax credits. If the windows you install are ENERGY STAR certified, you will receive a credit of 10 percent of the cost of the windows up to $200. This credit applies to the cost of the windows only and does not include any labor costs associated with installing the windows.
ENERGY STAR rated windows are based on U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) ratings for each of four climate zones. They are tested independently by the National Fenestration Rating Council to ensure they meet strict standards.
To apply for an Energy Efficiency Tax Credit, you will need to file an IRS Tax Form 5695 Residential Energy Credits (https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f5695.pdf )
and submit it with your taxes. In addition, you’ll also need to save your receipts for your windows and the Manufacturer’s Certification Statement as well.
A Manufacturer’s Certification Statement is a signed document from the window manufacturer that states the product is qualified to receive an Energy Efficiency Tax Credit. Generally, manufacturers will have these certifications on their websites.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency administers the Energy Star Program and has important information on the program and tax credits on their website located at https://energystar.zendesk.com/hc/en-us.
